Magnesium and Sweeteners

Updated: Jan 13, 2023

Our bodies are designed to get all the vitamins and minerals that we need from the foods that we eat. Unfortunately, many minerals are missing from our soil and have been since the early 1900’s. By eating well, we can provide our bodies with most of the nutrients we need, but it’s still difficult to get good levels of magnesium. Magnesium is used by every cell of the body and should definitely be taken for: 1) your nerve cells, things like anxiety, headaches, and brain issues 2) your muscle cells, issues like chronic muscle tightness, soreness, and pain. When the cells of the body are overworked, they use lots of magnesium, so its important to replenish this important mineral whenever you’re having health problems. Be aware that breaking down lots of sugar takes lots of magnesium, so that soda you just drank is sapping the important stuff your body needs to heal and be at its best. Because there are so many different types of magnesium available, I’ve stocked the type that my family and I use here at the clinic. Not all magnesium is created equal, and you often reach bowel tolerance (diarrhea) before you get the benefits. Liquid ionic magnesium is the type I’ve found to have the highest bio-availability, meaning that your body absorbs more of it. Start with a 1/4 teaspoon and move up to 1 teaspoon a day. If you begin having diarrhea with 1/2 tsp., split your intake: 1/4 tsp. in the morning and evening.

Sugar Alternatives

What about aspartame, also called Nutrasweet and Equal? Studies have shown that aspartame has seizure-promoting activity in those who are prone to them and that those with mood disorders are particularly sensitive to its effects. So...strongly in the “do not ingest” category.

Sucralose, also know as Splenda, is an artificial sweetener. It has been shown to causes long lasting damage to gut bacteria over time, and is also in “do not ingest” category.

Stevia is a natural South American sweetener that has been used in Paraguay for centuries. Of all the sweeteners mentioned here, this is the only naturally occurring compound. This is definitely worth trying as an alternative if your body can’t handle sugar.
